CBN extends deadline for collection of old naira notes to Feb 10

  The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has extended the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes by 10 days. This was disclosed in a press statement issued today January 29. The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, said the new deadline is February 10, 2023. Nigerians had been complaining about the inability to swap their old notes for the new designs as the January 31 deadline drew nearer. Emefiele said following the hardship Nigerians have experienced in their attempt to access the newly redesigned notes, President Buhari has given approval for the extension of the deadline. “Based on the foregoing, we have sought and obtained Mr President’s approval for the following: a 10-day extension of the deadline from January 31, 2023, to February 10, 2023; to allow for collection of more old notes legitimately held by  Nigerians and  achieve more success in cash swap in our rural communities  after  which all  old notes outside the CBN loses their Legal Tender Status.   A 28-year-old man, Folorunsho Olaniyan, has been caught while allegedly trying to steal a generator belonging to a customary court in the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State. P UNCH Metro  gathered that Olaniyan, a native of Ota, was caught by the court registrar, Kareem Tolulope. A source said the suspect, on Tuesday, January 24, broke into the office where the generator was kept by unscrewing the lock to the building. The source said the suspect took advantage of the public holiday declared by the state government for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards to commit the crime. An official of the Local Government Service Commission, Mercy Ajewole, also confirmed the arrest of the suspect. The Federal Government has released half of November 2022 check-off dues deducted from the salaries of all lecturers of federal universities in the country to the Academic Staff Union of Universities,  The PUNCH  has learnt.    The Lagos State Government has declared a four-day work-free day for public servants to enable them collect their Permanent Voter Cards at their respective local government/local council development areas in the state. The Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, who confirmed the development in a circular issued on Wednesday, said the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, graciously approved the work-free day for the public servants.  An Ikeja Special Offences Court presided over by Justice Mojisola Dada sentenced a 32-year-old vulcaniser, Chidozie Onyinchiz to death by hanging on Tuesday for robbing a nurse of N57,000. Justice Dada held that the prosecution had proved the three-count-charge of conspiracy, armed robbery and membership of an unlawful society against Onyinchiz. This, she said was because he had earlier confirmed to the police at Igando, Lagos, that his victim, Mrs Veronica Uwayzor sighted him and they both recognised each other at the time of the offence. “The defendant had stated that the complainant pointed at him as one of the boys armed with a pair of scissors and forcefully snatched her bag containing N57,000 at Akesan Bus Stop .He also stated that they ended up sleeping in an uncompleted building because Endurance’s father did not open the door for them to spend the night in his house. “The statement corroborated the submission of the victim that she was accosted at about 4.30 a.m. by two boys

 An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Court on Tuesday, sentenced a 27-year-old electrician, Olamide Ayodele, to life imprisonment for defiling the eight-year-old daughter of a man who gave him shelter.
